Keep your family and Your Propane System Safe During Seasons of Extreme Heat

Extreme Heat Conditions Can Be Harmful, Keep These Safety Tips In Mind

As the summer heat continues to blaze through California, it is important to adhere to safety precautions during these periods of extreme heat. By discussing the following with your family you can reduce the potential for property loss, personal injury, and even death.

BEFORE

  1. Be sure you know how and where to shut off your propane supply both outside and at your inside appliances.
  2. Make sure you and your family know what propane smells like.
  3. Never store a propane cylinder indoors or in an enclosed area.
  4. We recommend that you install a carbon monoxide detector in your home and a propane gas detector will provide additional security.

DURING

  1. Make sure your propane tank and propane grill both have a 10-foot clearance of any dry bush or debris that may ignite easily. This includes leaves, brush, vegetation, rags, and any trash.
  2. Cool down your outdoor tank by hosing it down with cool water from a garden hose. This will help lower the pressure in your propane tank. It will also reduce the releasing of excess gas through your tank’s built-in safety feature, the pressure relief valve.

AFTER

  1. If extreme heat conditions cause power outages or wildfires near you, it is important to remember to never use an outdoor propane appliance indoors or in enclosed areas as this could result in CO2 poisoning.
  2. Never try to modify or repair valves, regulators, or other appliance parts. Instead, call your local DLE representatives and we will send a technician out to assist you.
  3. Do inspect your propane appliances for water or other damage if it is safe to do so. If these appliances have an electric component that has been exposed to water, they can be a fire hazard.
